Recently, on The Magic Circle internal chat forum, there was a ‘complaint’ that The Magic Circle didn’t encourage enough youngsters to join its hallowed ranks. I thought that was slightly ironic as the truth is that if you want to be a real success in magic, you want to avoid joining any magic club.
This has certainly proved to be true in recent times. Easily the most successful magician around at present is Derren Brown – and he’s not a member. When Paul Daniels was at the height of his fame, he wasn’t a member. The same was true of Wayne Dobson and Geoffrey Durham aka The Great Soprendo.
Turning to the up and coming magicians around today, Pete Firman, the Scottish duo Barry and Stuart, Chris Cox, Dynamo, Philip Escoffey and Jerry Sadowtiz are all non-members.
The sooner I resign from The Magic Circle, the better it will probably be for me!
