There’s a sequence in my show where I ask an audience member to think of a significant year in his life. Occasionally, when I enquire whether they are concentrating on the year, they actually call the year out loud. As I’m meant to be reading their minds, understandably this gets a big laugh from the rest of the audience at the unfortunate participant’s expense.

Having milked that situation as much as possible, I then ask him to think of another significant year – and proceed as normal.

Last month I was doing my show in Wales and the above scenario took place. After the laughs had died down, I asked him to think of another significant year. Once again I said: “are you concentrating on it?” And he proceeded to shout out the year again – which brought the house down.

This is the only time that I had experienced this; and mentally put it down to the fact that he probably wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. Not wanting to embarrass the man any further, I shifted my attention to someone else.

After the show, the organiser sidled up to me. “You know that man you had problems with: he’s standing as a County Councillor in the next election!”
